In this post, we'll show how to install your Helm charts hosted on Amazon ECR into your Amazon EKS clusters.

Prerequisites

  • Install the Helm version 3 client;
  • You have pushed a Helm chart to your Amazon ECR repository;
  • You have configured kubectl to work with Amazon EKS. For more information, see Creating a kubeconfig for Amazon EKS in the Amazon EKS User Guide. If the following command succeeds for your cluster, your configuration is correct:
  • kubectl get svc

Install a Helm chart hosted on Amazon ECR into an Amazon EKS cluster

Enable OCI support in the Helm 3 client.

export HELM_EXPERIMENTAL_OCI=1

Authenticate your Helm client to the Amazon ECR registry where your Helm chart is hosted. Authentication tokens must be obtained for each registry used and are valid for 12 hours. For more information, see Private registry authentication.

aws ecr get-login-password \
 — region us-west-2 | helm registry login \
 — username AWS \
 — password-stdin aws_account_id.dkr.ecr.region.amazonaws.com

Pull the Helm chart into the local cache.

helm chart pull aws_account_id.dkr.ecr.region.amazonaws.com/repository-name:mychart

Export the chart to a local directory. In this example, we use a directory named charts.

helm chart export aws_account_id.dkr.ecr.region.amazonaws.com/repository-name:mychart — destination ./charts

Install the chart.

helm install ecr-chart-demo ./mychart

The output should look like this:

NAME: ecr-chart-demo
LAST DEPLOYED: Wed Sep 2 14:32:07 2020
NAMESPACE: default
STATUS: deployed
REVISION: 1
NOTES:

Verify the chart installation. The output will be a YAML representation of the Kubernetes resources deployed by the chart.

helm get manifest ecr-chart-demo

See your Helm chart running in the Amazon EKS pod

kubectl get pods — all-namespaces

When you're done, you can remove the chart release from the cluster.

helm uninstall ecr-chart-demo

See you in the next post! =)
