Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) is a fully managed Kubernetes service on AWS. With it, customers such as Intel, Snap, Intuit, GoDaddy and many other companies run their most sensitive and mission-critical applications thanks to its security, reliability and scalability. In this series of posts we will see how to implement Amazon EKS from scratch all the way to deploying an application. The topics we will cover:
- Part 1 — Configuring a cluster in EKS
- Part 2 — Configuring node-groups in EKS
- Part 3 — Configuring IAM users as Masters
- Part 4 — Packaging from source code
- Part 5 — Publishing a container image to ECR
- Part 6 — Deploying to EKS from an image in ECR
Continuing our series, today we will package our environment from our source code.
Part 4 — Packaging from source code
PACKAGING FROM SOURCE CODE
- Update the operating system packages (Amazon Linux);
- sudo yum update
- Install Docker and Git;
sudo yum install -y docker git
- Install Development Tools
sudo yum groupinstall -y ‘Development Tools’
- Start Docker
sudo service docker start
- Install Docker Compose and make it executable
sudo curl -L https://github.com/docker/compose/releases/download/1.23.2/docker-compose-`uname -s`-`uname -m` -o /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
- Run the NVM install script
curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.33.11/install.sh | bash
source ~/.bashrc
nvm install 6
- Install GO
wget https://dl.google.com/go/go1.11.2.linux-amd64.tar.gz
tar xvf go1.11.2.linux-amd64.tar.gz
sudo mv go /usr/local
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/go/bin
echo “export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/go/bin” >> ~/.bashrc
go env
- Add the user to the Docker group
sudo usermod -a -G docker $USER
docker version
- Download and run the test application
git clone https://github.com/linuxacademy/eks-deep-dive-2019.git
cd eks-deep-dive-2019/picture-upload/
make install
cd apps/photo-filter/
go build
cd picture-upload/
nano docker-compose.yml # editar o arquivo adicionando access key, secret key e região
docker compose up
In our next post, we will talk about how to publish a container image to ECR.
See you then! =)
